Carleton Prof. Shikharesh Majumdar in the Faculty of Engineering and Design has received funding for a new cloud-based platform that will help researchers build smart facilities and smart cities. The project is among eight new software platforms and components that received a total of $2.4 million from CANARIE, Canada’s advanced research and innovation network. The funding invests in projects that enable Canadian scientists to analyze, visualize and share immense volumes of research data, transforming data into knowledge and insight that contribute to Canada’s economic and social development.

“Carleton researchers are at the forefront of building the infrastructure that will enable the next generation of cloud-based platforms and applications,” said Kim Matheson, vice-president, Research and International. “CANARIE is a vital component of Canada’s digital research infrastructure and we’re very pleased that Carleton researchers are receiving its support to help advance Canada’s global leadership in this domain.”

Majumdar’s Research Platform for Smart Facilities Management (RP-SMARF), will allow widely-dispersed researchers to share scattered data analysis tools, databases and expertise toward building smart facilities in the increasingly interconnected smart cities of the future.

“Canada is a world leader in the development of reusable research software services that are used in multiple research domains, accelerating knowledge creation,” said Mark Wolff, CANARIE’s chief technology officer. “The CANARIE Research Software Program responds to the community’s need for a robust set of software tools that are the foundation for Canadian leadership in digital discovery.”

This project includes co-investigators David Lau, Jie Liu and Marc St-Hilaire of Carleton University and is in partnership with Solana Networks led by Dr. Biswajit Nandy.
