Kathryn Boschmann, a Carleton University master’s history student, has won one of 25 Storyteller Awards from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). The award is valued at $3,000.

The challenge tasked post-secondary students across Canada with demonstrating how social sciences and humanities research affects our lives, our world and our future prosperity. They were asked to produce a video, podcast, editorial or infographic promoting a great SSHRC-funded research project.

“I am so excited and humbled to be among the Top 25,” says Boschmann. “This is a fantastic opportunity to tell people about my research and share the stories of my interviewees.”

Boschmann submitted a podcast about her research on the oral history interviews she conducted with first generation Irish Canadians living in Winnipeg.

In her thesis, she is exploring how people talked about and processed their migration experience and Ireland’s past.

“I’m focusing on embodied experience, particularly performance activities (such as playing music) and the experiences of landscape and weather,” shares Boshmann. “I also creating online exhibits for each chapter of the written portion of my thesis in order to make my research more accessible and hopefully to give back to the community which so generously shared their experiences with me.”

When she’s not doing school work, Boschmann organizes social activities for the History Graduate Student’s Association.

The Top 25 finalists, representing 16 postsecondary institutions across Canada, each receive a cash prize and will go on to compete in The Storytellers Showcase at the 2015 Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, May 30 to June 5 at the University of Ottawa.

Starting April 14, SSHRC will feature five of these finalists each week via its website and on social media. In addition, this year a list of Honourable Mentions can be found on the SSHRC YouTube channel.

The Top 25 finalists were selected from among nearly 250 entries by some 30 expert judges from Canada and abroad.
