Carleton University’s Claire Samson, professor in the Department of Earth Sciences, has been elected president of the Canadian Geophysical Union (CGU) for a two-year term. Samson was recently vice-president of the CGU and has been an active member of the solid earth section for many years.

“I follow a line of very good presidents and I am taking over the CGU in good shape,” said Samson. “However, as is a trend in many professional institutions, we are facing a generational change in attitudes and expectations, and we are looking for new ways to engage and add value for members. We have taken the first steps and have begun to upgrade our website and to actively engage members on Twitter. In the current economic climate, I would also like to see the CGU play an increasing role in connecting members to opportunities via networking.”

The CGU represents the interests of Canadian geoscientists in many ways, with organized scientific meetings, interactions with funding agencies and advocacy of the role of science in society and policy-making. The union includes five sections: hydrology, geodesy, solid earth, biogeosciences and earth-surface processes.

“I am already the president of the Canadian Exploration Geophysical Society, which represents the professionals working in industry rather than the academic side of things,” said Samson. “I am working to have more collaboration between the two organizations so that members of one can benefit from the programs in both. “
