On Wednesday, April 1, 2015, Carleton University will celebrate its strategic development in data sciences with Data Day 2.0

The event will begin with the launch of the new Institute of Data Science, which will lead the development of data science initiatives in each university faculty.

Data Day will feature presentations by Carleton researchers from across various faculties and will be followed by a panel discussion featuring key national players.

Media are invited to attend and representatives will be on-hand to discuss the new Institute of Data Science.

This event is free and open to the public but registration is required and space is limited.

When: Wednesday, April 1, 2015, from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. The announcement of the Institute of Data Science will take place at 8:50 a.m. A full schedule of events is available here.

Where: River Building Atrium, Carleton University, 1125 Colonel By Drive, Ottawa

To showcase student research using data sciences, a poster competition will be held in conjunction with Data Day. Posters will be adjudicated by a panel of external partners/judges. Gold, silver and bronze monetary prizes are sponsored by IBM.

Presentations by Carleton faculty on various aspects of data science, chaired by Kim Matheson, vice-president (Research and International), will begin at 9:30 a.m. They include:

  • Shawn Graham – Department of History – Big data and the Humanities: Examples from History
  • Merlyna Lim – School of Journalism and Communication – Social Media and Network Activism
  • Robert Biddle – School of Computer Science – Visual Analytics and Security
  • Shikaresh Majumdar – Director of the Real Time and Distributed Systems Research Centre, Faculty of Engineering and Design – Cloud Computing and Data Analytics

The panel, called Challenges for Big Data and Analytics of this Expanding Discipline, will take place at 11:30 a.m. It will be moderated by Andrew Ross from the Eclipse Foundation and speakers include:

  • Claire Austin – Environment Canada and Research Data Canada
  • Solmaz Shahalizadeh – Shopify
  • Dennis Buttera – IBM Canada
  • Stephan Jou – Interset Analysts
