Carleton University’s Adrian Chan, associate professor in the research intensive Faculty of Engineering and Design, received the Outstanding Biomedical Engineer of the Year award at the Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Society (CMBES) conference on June 11, 2015.
“It is great to get this kind of recognition from your peers and colleagues,” said Chan, who is also associate dean in the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs. “Looking at the list of previous distinguished recipients, it very special to be included. It is a list of people I highly respect.
This CMBES award was established in 1989 and is presented to a Canadian biomedical engineer who has made outstanding contributions in their field. Achievements can be in the form of scientific or technical developments, as well as a broad-spectrum of areas such as leadership, service and organizational skills that contributed to the improvement of health-care delivery in Canada, or prominence in organizations concerned with biomedical engineering.
Chan’s recent research is in the area of biomedical monitoring. Where in the past this monitoring has been done by medical experts in controlled environments, recently there has been an explosion of data from an increasing amount of monitoring done by patients at home through the use of wearable devices. This has advantages, but the situation also presents numerous challenges in determining the validity of data collected by non-professionals in uncontrolled environments.
