Two new Canada Research Chairs were announced today for Carleton University, while two other chairs were renewed. Sonia Chiasson is Canada Research Chair in Human Oriented Computer Security and Stuart Murray joins Carleton as the Canada Research Chair in Rhetoric and Ethics. Both James Meadowcroft and Banu Ormeci received renewals for their important work on sustainable development policy and clean water, respectively.

The country-wide funding announcement made by the Honourable Gary Goodyear, minister of state for science and technology, unveiled $124.5 million allocated among 132 chairs to undertake for research at 36 Canadian postsecondary institutions.

Carleton’s funding, $2.5 million over 5 years, will allow its researchers to do important work on the human side of computer security and privacy, the changing nature of ethics, building policy that encourages sustainable development and creating safer water for our world.

Sonia Chiasson – Canada Research Chair in Human Oriented Computer Security

When looking at computer security and privacy, it is important to consider the human side of the equation instead of solely the technical side. Chiasson’s research focuses on how human factors impact real-world computer security, how to effectively incorporate human factors into security designs, and identifying foundational design principles for the general area of usable security.

Stuart Murray – Canada Research Chair in Rhetoric and Ethics

Murray’s research contributes to an understanding of ethics in light of the ethical challenges raised by burgeoning biotechnologies and biopolitical forms of governance. As the world changes, so does the need for updated ethical codes.

James Meadowcroft – Canada Research Chair in Governance for Sustainable Development (renewal)

Meadowcroft’s research explores what governments can do to encourage societies to produce and consume in a more sustainable manner. He aims to help Canadian policy-makers to stimulate innovation and accelerate the up-take of greener technologies and social practices. His work strives to find a way to meet human social and economic aspirations, while dramatically reducing associated environmental burdens.

Banu Ormeci – Canada Research Chair in Wastewater and Public Health Engineering (renewal)

Ormeci’s research aims to ensure there is proper treatment of water and wastewater to protect public health. Her work is geared to improving the performance of existing and emerging wastewater and biosolids treatment processes, developing new technologies to achieve treatment goals, determining the fate and persistence of pathogens and chemicals through treatment processes, and identifying their potential effects on the environment and public health.
