Special Issue Examines Canadian Foreign Policy in a Unipolar World

Carleton’s David Carment, a professor at the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs and editor of the Canadian Foreign Policy Journal- along with guest editors Michael Hawes and Christopher Kirkey have published a special issue that examines the extent to which structural features of the international system dictate Canada’s foreign policy and other pertinent questions relating to Canada’s changing role in the international community.

From the post-Second World War bipolar international political system of 1945-1991 to a system that today is considered by many as unipolar, there has been a profound structural shift in Canada’s foreign policy.  Scholarly accounts of Canadian foreign policy behaviour in the post-1991 period have, to date, been overwhelmingly focused on domestic determinants.

“These articles discuss an exciting and timely issue,” said Carment. “Some experts think that Canada is ignored by the current US administration, but this issue demonstrates how strong and lasting the relationship really is. It’s a relationship influenced by common interests, geography and history. Readers will find excellence in all the articles covering everything from trade and the environment to security, the Middle East and the G8.”

The original articles presented in this issue of the journal were delivered at an international colloquium in Lake Placid, New York (planned and convened by the Center for the Study of Canada at SUNY Plattsburgh, Fulbright Canada, and the Canadian Foreign Policy Journal).

16 leading researchers in the fields of foreign policy, international trade and security contributed to the volume.
