3M Canada has announced that Carleton’s Fraser Taylor is the recipient of the fourth annual 3M Environmental Innovation Award. The award was presented during a ceremony on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012 at the Royal Canadian Geographic Society College of Fellows Annual Dinner in Ottawa.
Taylor is a Distinguished Research Professor in the Department of Geography and director of the Geomatics and Cartographic Research Centre. The centre aims to merge technology and cartography in new and interesting ways. Cybercartography, a term he introduced during a conference in 1997, has since been accepted around the world.
Among his many research interests, Taylor has been working to develop a framework that merges crowd-sourced data with official data from government and scientific sources. The goal is the ability to map intangible data such as social phenomena, moods and feelings, or data not usually considered by official sources, such as the concentration of record stores in a given city or stray cats in a neighbourhood.
“With new technology and a unique perspective, Dr. Taylor has transformed cartography into a positive force for environmental understanding and change in Canada and around the world,” said Elise Maheu, Manager, 3M Canada Government Markets, as she presented Dr. Taylor with the award.
The award, sponsored by 3M Canada in partnership with the Royal Canadian Geographical Society (RCGS), celebrates individuals involved in a local, regional or national project, program or initiative that has provided innovative solutions that protect, restore or preserve the environment.
