Carleton University will be presenting its first Graduate Research Forum and Three Minute Thesis Competition (3MT) on March 27th. The events are sponsored by Carleton’s Graduate Students’ Association and the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs.

The Graduate Research Forum will feature a panel discussion about research communication, the Three Minute Thesis Semi-finals and Finals and a keynote address from James Turk, executive director of the Canadian Association of University Teachers. The research forum will include dozens of poster presentations.

As part of the Forum, the 3MT will feature masters and doctoral students delivering clear and concise oral presentations about their independent research. They must present the key idea and the impact of their research in three minutes or less. A panel of judges will choose the top three presenters. All three win cash prizes; while the top two will go on to compete in the provincial 3MT competition.

9 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. – 3MT Semi-Finals
12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. – Panel discussion on Research Communication
1: 30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. – 3MT Finals
3:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. – James Turk keynote on The Future of Scientific and Scholarly Research in Canada

Who:  James Turk

Turk is the Executive Director of the Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT). Prior to his work at CAUT, Turk was an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Toronto specializing in Canadian Studies, and was the Director of the Labour Studies Program at University College. He has also been Director of Education for the Ontario Federation of Labour.

He is a member of the Executive and of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives; a member of Advisory Board of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education/U of T; and a former chair of the Ontario Coalition for Social Justice. Turk received his PhD at the University of Toronto, his MA from the University of California at Berkeley and his BA from Harvard University. He was a Knox Fellow at Cambridge University. His most recent book is an edited collection, The Corporate Campus: Commercialization and the Dangers to Canada’s Colleges and Universities.
