Carleton’s Qi-Jun Zhang has been awarded a Strategic Project Grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). Zhang, a professor in the Department of Electronics at Carleton University, will receive $416,000 for his work on component design in wireless and wireline communications networks.
High-frequency components and electronic systems are the fundamental building blocks of modern communications networks. Zhang’s research tackles challenges in the modelling and design of the components that drive these networks. His research seeks to incorporate the cognitive knowledge, experience and intuition of human designers into computer-aided design and modelling techniques. His industry partners for this project include Blackberry, COM-DEV International and Fidus Systems.
“Carleton faculty are carrying out cutting-edge research that will enhance knowledge and understanding around a host of important issues,” said Kim Matheson, vice-president, Research and International. “NSERC funding is critical in helping Carleton researchers address the issues of today while anticipating the concerns of tomorrow.”
The goal of Strategic Project Grants is to increase research and training in targeted areas that could strongly enhance Canada’s economy, society and/or environment within the next 10 years.
