Two Carleton University students were recognized for their honours thesis research during the annual Ontario Biology Day conference on March 22 and 23.

Trevor Deley received the award for Excellence in Genetics Research for his talk Examination of obesogenic related methylation changes of the POMC promoter in female CD1 mice neonatally exposed to bisphenol-A. Deley was supervised by Alex Wong, a postdoctoral fellow in Biology and Biochemistry; John Stead, chair of the department of Neuroscience; and Alfonzo Abizaid, associate professor of Neuroscience.

Nadia Lahoud received the Canadian Society of Zoology award for Excellence in Zoology Research for her poster titled Effects of octopamine on forewing first basalar (M97) muscle activation in locusts, (Locusta migratoria L.). She was supervised by Jeff Dawson, associate professor of Biology.

In total, five Carleton University undergraduate students attended the conference, hosted this year by the University of Toronto at Mississauga. Carleton’s Department of Biology will host the Ontario Biology Day conference in 2015.
