Have you ever wondered what it would be like to go to Antarctica? Find out on Wednesday, March 19th at Carleton University’s Lessons from the Great White South.

In late 2013, a group of Carleton students set off on a Students on Ice journey to Antarctica to study the southern polar region and foster a new understanding and respect for our planet. This event is an opportunity for the public to learn about their experiences there. Prof. Claudia Schröder-Adams and 13 Carleton students will provide a scientific diary of their journey. If you have an interest in Antarctica, its geological history, unique climate or ecosystem, this is an event you won’t want to miss.

This event is free and open to the public, but space is limited and registration is required here. Media are invited to attend.

When: Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. Guests are encouraged to arrive before 6:20 p.m.

Where: River Building Atrium, Carleton University, 1125 Colonel By Drive, Ottawa

The evening will include 13 presentations, one by each Carleton University participant, who will discuss a unique facet of Antarctica. The topics, listed below, take on a historical, geological and biological vantage point in order to communicate both the importance and the majesty of the Southern Ocean and Antarctic Continent:

Claudia Schröder-Adams: Opening remarks
Brent Clark: Antarctica – Our journey
Phill Snable: Antarctica – A place for exciting current research
David Melanson: Antarctica’s geological history – How do we know?
Anna Labudzka: What do Antarctica and Patagonia have in common?
Danielle Dionne: Mesozoic Antarctica – A tale of rich terrestrial ecosystems
Jasmine Clancy: Formation of the Drake Passage and the mighty southern ocean
Lianna Vice: Whale evolution as response to the history of the southern ocean

Cassandra Cheung: Of Tuyas and Pleistocene volcanic eruptions
Jordan Thoms: The many forms of Antarctic ice
