He has edited (or co-edited) several books on Eastern Europe and Russia and is a member of the Valdai Club, an international group of the world’s most respected Russian scholars who provide advice to the Russian president.

Carment is a NATO fellow and is listed in Who’s Who in International Affairs. In addition, he serves as the principal investigator for the Country Indicators for Foreign Policy project (CIFP).

He has served as the director of Carleton’s Centre for Security and Defence Studies, SSHRC fellowships and research awards, Carleton’s Research Achievement Award and a Petro-Canada Young Innovator Award. He has held fellowships at the Kennedy School, Harvard and the Hoover Institution, Stanford. He currently heads a team of researchers that evaluates policy effectiveness in failed and fragile states.

Joan DeBardeleben

DeBardeleben is specifically interested in discussions about the situation involving the EU and Russia. She holds Jean Monnet Chair in the EU’s Eastern Neighbourhood Relations. She is the author of numerous books and articles dealing with Russian politics, with topics that include public opinion, labour relations and privatization, environmental politics, federalism and elections. Her recent research work also deals with EU-Russian relations and the EU’s policy toward its eastern neighbours, as well as with political participation in the European Union. Recently DeBardeleben has been working on a research project entitled Interests, and Governance Structures in EU-Russian Relations: Constructing issues and framing interests, funded by a SSHRC Standard Research Grant. DeBardeleben is president of the European Community Studies Association-Canada, a former president of the Canadian Association of Slavists, and an active member of the Association for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies. She has been a Visiting Researcher at the Mannheim Center for European Social Research and in at the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik in Berlin.

Saideman is specifically interested in discussing the NATO perspective and the general idea of irredentism or annexation. Saideman’s research interests focus on the causes and consequences of intervention into intra-state conflicts. His current work focuses on Canadian and NATO efforts in Afghanistan. He teaches courses on civil-military relations and American foreign and defence policy.

Mikhail Zherebtsov

Zherebtsov is an expert in Russian politics, both domestic and foreign. His major field of expertise is public policy and administration and comparative politics. His research projects include work on Russia-EU transborder co-operation. Prior to coming to Canada and completing his PhD, he worked as a media-analyst for NTV Channel in Russia.
