Carleton University’s Banu Örmeci, Canada Research Chair in Wastewater Treatment Engineering and professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has won a 2014 Imperial Oil University Research Award. The award includes $25,000 in funding to support Örmeci’s research. It can be renewed annually based on successful research results.

The Imperial Oil University Research Award provides a unique opportunity and seed funding to apply Örmeci’s method for dewatering and optimization oil sands residuals.

“It is an extension of our current research on dewatering optimization of wastewater sludge, where we have developed a new method that is being patented with support from the GreenCentre Canada, a federally funded program that helps bring university research to the market,” said Örmeci.

These awards are designed to encourage research in multiple areas including the fields of engineering, environmental, earth, chemical and physical sciences. In 2013, 20 projects at 10 universities across Canada were funded. An Imperial Oil selection committee considers business relevance of the proposed research, opportunities for knowledge transfer and potential significance of results.
