Carleton University’s Piotr Dutkiewicz, professor of Political Science and a director of the Centre for Governance and Public Management, has been awarded the Russia-Canada Business Council (RCBC) Award for Distinguished Service to Canada-Russia Relations.

Dutkiewicz’s received this honour for a series of scholarly publications related to Russia, his public speaking on Russia and for organizing public events related to Canadian-Russian relations.

“During my 14 years at Carleton, my goal has been to create a space for an open debate about Russia and our political and economic relations with that country,” said Dutkiewicz. “My dream was that Carleton would become an internationally recognized platform for scholarly debate and critical analysis of Russian and Eurasian affairs. This award highlights the fact that– with many colleagues from Institute of European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (EURUS) and other Carleton units — we were able to accomplish the goal of being one of the very best centres for Eurasian studies in North America.

“Despite the many controversies that surround Russia, I believe that deeper co-operation between Canada and Russia is the only rational solution as part of stable global development, since the alternative is the further fragmentation of economic space, more economic wars, more trade restrictions and regulatory barriers.”

This award was created to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the founding of the RCBC in 2004. The RCBC is a joint initiative of the Canada-Eurasia-Russia Business Association (CERBA) and the Russian Union of Entrepreneurs and Industrialists (RSPP). It was established to develop business co-operation between Canada and Russia.

The RCBC honoured four individuals who have made significant contributions to the Canada-Russia working relationship in commerce, academia, science and culture.  In addition to Dutkiewicz, they include former Russian envoy Georgiy Mamedov, Russian Hockey Federation President, Vladislav Tretiak, and Chris Hadfield, commander of the International Space Station during Expedition 35.
