Carleton University’s Ana C. Dammert, professor in the Department of Economics and School of International Affairs, and José Galdo, professor in the School of Public Policy and the Department of Economics and principal investigator, together with Bekele Shiferaw of Partnership for Economic Policy (PEP) have received a IZA/DFID Growth and Labour Markets in Low Income Countries (GLM/LIC) grant valued at approximately $523,000.

The grant application was entitled Fair Trade: Labour Markets and Women’s Economic Empowerment. “A key component of Fair Trade is its promise to improve the living standards of small-scale farmers in developing countries and to empower women,” said Galdo. “Yet, we do not have much evidence on whether these promises are indeed observed in reality.“

“This research program will allow us to analyze, using household surveys and evidence-based methods, the extent to which Fair Trade participation affects both labour markets outcomes and intra-household dynamics in terms of production, resources, income, time and leadership,” said Dammert. “In addition, we will implement and analyze the effectiveness of specific policy interventions aimed at lifting constraints against women in Fair Trade labour markets. We will focus on Ethiopia since it is the largest Fair Trade certified producer of coffee with 50 per cent of producers in the system certified.”

IZA/DFID program on Growth and Labour Markets in Low Income Countriesfocuses on various labour-market issues in low-income countries (LICs). This program selects promising research and capacity-building activities in the field. The overall goal is to improve the global understanding of labor markets in LICs and their relevance to economic growth and to help local decision makers in LICs develop labor-related policies. This program is funded by the United Kingdom Government Department for International Development (DFID).
