Carleton University has successfully completed testing and will soon start building cutting-edge gas detectors to upgrade the ATLAS detector.

Quick Facts:

  • The detectors are over a metre square and will ensure the experiment for the high-luminosity operation of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) continues past 2018.
  • These chambers, when in place at the LHC detector, will allow scientists to measure the trajectories of muons.
  • The sensors are essential to the study of the Higgs boson and the search for new physics.
  • This component is part of a larger international collaboration involving Israel, Chile and China.
  • Canada will build one-third of the detectors with construction taking place in Carleton’s Herzberg Building.

Quotes:

“The discovery of the Higgs boson with the ATLAS detector at CERN provided the missing link in one of the most profound mysteries of particle physics, namely the origin of particle masses. It closed one chapter on our understanding of the fundamental constituents of matter, while simultaneously opening the next chapter of inquiry.” Alain Bellerive, professor of Particle Physics.

“Carleton is leading the deployment of the ATLAS projects called the New Muon Small Wheel (NSW),” said Bellerive. “Carleton’s participation in ATLAS keeps our university at the cutting-edge of science internationally, while also engaging students in research. The fact that three undergraduate students from Carleton were central figures in this research, and that two of those students will be starting graduate studies at ATLAS this fall, makes me extremely proud of the work we are doing in the Department of Physics.” Bellerive.
