Carleton has joined with local information and communications technology (ICT) heavyweights for the launch of the National Centre of Excellence in Next Generation Networks (CENGN). CENGN will provide advanced telecommunications infrastructure for researchers while working to commercialize leading-edge telecommunications technologies and bring Canada back to the forefront of ICT research. The centre was officially unveiled today at its headquarters in Kanata.

“This is a new model that represents opportunities for partnership and collaboration in the Ottawa region for the benefit of the nation,” said Kim Matheson, vice-president (Research and International). “Carleton University, with its history of excellence in telecommunications technology, is uniquely positioned to contribute to this new Centre of Excellence.”

Carleton will contribute expertise in 5G and 4G wireless technology, cloud services, broadband communications, sensors, the connectedness of global devices and more. CENGN will provide a sophisticated test bed for the innovative technologies that Carleton researchers are developing. Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SME’s) will also be able to access CENGN’s innovative networking capabilities to test their experimental platforms.

CENGN was brought to life in August 2014 when the Honourable Ed Holder, Minister of State for Science and Technology, announced that it would be receive $11.7 million over the next five years. Invest Ottawa was a driving force in the creation of CENGN, and Carleton and the University of Ottawa are the two founding academic partners. Corporate partners include international and national companies anchored in Ottawa. Not-for-profit group CANARIE is also a partner.
