Two Carleton University researchers will receive more than $175,000 in funding from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) to pursue studies on concussions and helmet standards, as well as how regret influences decision-making. The funding is part of the John R. Evans Leaders Opportunity Fund, designed to help universities attract and retain the best researchers at a time of intense international competition.

“CFI’s support is a vote of confidence for Carleton’s research in areas as diverse as engineering and economics,” said Kim Matheson, vice-president (Research and International). “This funding will help Carleton University retain a competitive edge in research that is of global importance.”

To this end, JELF offers institutions the opportunity to:

  • Acquire infrastructure for their leading research faculty to undertake cutting-edge research; and
  • Create competitive research support packages in the form of infrastructure and a portion of the operating and maintenance costs from the CFI, coupled with direct research costs from partner organizations.

The two Carleton researchers are:

Oren Petel, assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

Petel’s project targets traumatic brain injury, one form of which is a concussion, and is a primary health concern due to a combination of its prevalence and our contemporary understanding of the neurodegeneration that may follow the injury.

The primary objective of the project is to develop tools to modernize helmet certification standards by making use of a high-speed X-ray fluoroscope to enable investigation into head injury biomechanics.

Radovan Vadovic, assistant professor in the Department of Economics

Vadovic will develop an experimental economics laboratory at Carleton University to facilitate high-quality research and student training about the ways in which the emotion of anticipated regret influences decision-making.

The laboratory will allow researchers from the eastern Ontario region to pursue cutting-edge research and generate new insights from unique laboratory data sets. Researchers will be also able to evaluate designs of new economic systems such as procurement auctions, contractual provisions and taxation policies.
