FPA Research Month Kicks off on Feb. 24
Carleton University’s Faculty of Public Affairs will showcase its latest research during FPA Research Month, taking place between Feb. 24 and March 24, 2015. The month-long events series is an opportunity for the public to learn more about our faculty’s research on the most pressing issues facing society today.
Events will include:
Preventing Future Insurgencies: Journalism and Communication
When: Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2015 from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m.
Where: River Building Atrium, Carleton University, 1125 Colonel By Drive, Ottawa
This is a two-part event hosted by Communication Studies Prof. Karim H. Karim. The event will begin with a reception and book launch of two volumes co-edited by Karim and Mahmoud Eid and will be followed by a panel discussion on preventing future insurgencies. It will draw from the work of the Community Resilience project of the Canadian Council of Muslim Women (CCMW).
2015 Attallah Lecture with Microsoft Researcher Kate Crawford
When: Thursday, March 5, 2015 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.
Where: River Building, Carleton University, 1125 Colonel By Drive, Ottawa
Kate Crawford, principal researcher at Microsoft Research and visiting professor at the MIT Center for Civic Research, will deliver the 2015 Attallah Lecture hosted by the School of Journalism and Communication. Crawford investigates the ethical failures of Big Data and the power dimensions of data analytics.
2015 Bell Lecture with Economist Jim Stanford
When: Monday, March 9, 2015 from 7:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m.
Where: River Building, Carleton University, 1125 Colonel By Drive, Ottawa
Economist Jim Stanford will deliver the 2015 Dick, Ruth, and Judy Bell Lecture called Economic Literacy: Getting Past ‘Supply and Demand’. Stanford examines macroeconomics, the labour market, fiscal and trade policy analysis, collective bargaining and corporate research, union strategy and union education for the labour union, Unifor National. He is the author of Economics for Everyone, which has been translated into six languages. He writes an economics column for the Globe and Mail, appears regularly on CBC’s Bottom Line economics panel and is the vice-president of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives.
2015 Kesterton Lecture with Toronto Star Reporter Kevin Donovan
When: Thursday, March 12, 2015 from 6:30 p.m. until 9 p.m.
Where: River Building, Carleton University, 1125 Colonel By Drive, Ottawa
Kevin Donovan, investigative reporter with the Toronto Star, will deliver the 2015 Kesterton Lecture called Saving Journalism One Exposé at a Time: How Investigative Journalism is Turning People on Again. In addition to being lead reporter on the Jian Ghomeshi story, Donovan led the reporting on the ORNGE air ambulance service in 2011. He has won three National Newspaper Awards, two Michener Awards and three Canadian Association of Journalists Awards. He is the author of The Dead Times, a mystery novel; the co-author with Nick Pron of Crime Story; and author of ORNGE: The Star Investigation That Broke the Story.
YouthREX Launch: Researchers Join Forces with Youth Centres
When: February 25, 12 noon
Where: River Building, Carleton University, 1125 Colonel By Drive, Ottawa
Social work faculty and local grassroots support workers will launch a program called YouthREX: Youth Research and Evaluation eXchange, funded by the Province of Ontario.
YouthREX will allow youth support workers to access resources through Carleton’s School of Social Work to evaluate the effectiveness of their work and to share it with other youth organizations in Ontario.

The Faculty of Public Affairs is the only faculty of its kind in Canada.
