When we visit websites, we are often given suggestions regarding a choice to be made, an item to be bought or a web search that we might want to perform. These suggestions arise from processing large quantities of data collected through tracking user activity while individuals are visiting and interacting with certain sites. Processing this data leads to the creation of profiles and these profiles are used to generate recommendations. Organizations use profiles and the social network of interactions between users to promote ideas and to influence the opinions of others.

Join Tony White, professor of Computer Science, as he introduces the principles and practices of recommender systems, ideas of social influence and their use in today’s online systems.

Where: Ottawa Public Library, Sunnyside Branch, 1049 Bank Street.

When: Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2015 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The free 20-minute discussion will be followed by a question and answer session.  The Science Café series takes place every second Wednesday until April 8, 2015.

The Science Café series is organized by the Faculty of Science at Carleton University to discuss relevant issues facing our society and how science can help solve real-world problems. Meet some of our award-winning faculty members and graduate students as they share their excitement about science with the community. For more information, visit Sciencecafe.Carleton.ca.
