This year, the winner of Carleton’s 2015 Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition and the People’s Choice Winner is Ann Morneau from Women’s and Gender Studies for her presentation Knitting Takes Balls. She wins $1,000 and $250 for the People’s Choice Award. She will also receive an all-expense-paid trip to London, Ont. to complete at the Provincial 3MT competition at Western University on April 23, 2015.

Sahil Dhawan from Civil and Environmental Engineering came in second place winning $500 for his presentation Biofiltration – A Sustainable Water Treatment Technology. Third place and $250 went to Janna Klostermann from the School of Linguistics and Language Studies for her presentation Cubicles for Artists.

Carleton graduate students competed by presenting their 3MTs to a panel of judges consisting of members of the Graduate Students’ Association (GSA), faculty and staff, and the community. The presentations were judged on the basis of communication style, comprehension and engagement.

About 3MT

The 3MT is a celebration of graduate student research that challenges grad students to communicate the key concepts of their research in a compelling presentation of three minutes or less. The 3MT is an excellent professional development opportunity for all grad students. Participants learn to communicate their research ideas clearly, learn invaluable public speaking and presentation skills, and often emerge with a clearer vision of their research objectives.
