Carleton University’s Flyboys have made it to the top eight of the Airbus Fly Your Ideas Best Video Team competition, the only one from Canada on the list out of 85 team submissions. The winner will be announced May 17, 2015.

The team of four is made up of undergraduate Aerospace Engineering students Mohamed Shabaan, Moustafa Abdelfattah Sohdy, Ahmed Shabaan and Abdelrahman Awad.

Their project involves an automated smart system that uses biometrics for check-in/check-out instead of conventional boarding documents. At a variety of locations in the airport, on-flight and on-ground passenger informing and entertainment systems (LOOPIES) kiosks include a fingerprint scan that displays a passenger’s flight number, scheduled time of departure, the time remaining before takeoff and their terminal and gate of departure. A 3D map guides the passenger to the appropriate gate.

In addition, a smart in-flight entertainment system is being developed. The system includes unique features such as an autonomous food delivery system and a lavatory availability indicator. LOOPIES in baggage claim areas inform passengers when their bags left the plane and their estimated time to arrive on the belt.
