The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation has announced that Carleton University alumna Jennifer Peirce is among the 2015 recipients of its coveted doctoral scholarship in the social sciences and humanities.
As part of her three-year scholarship, Peirce will work with an engaged and inspiring community of scholars, mentors and fellows in order to accelerate her professional growth. The $60,000 annual package includes a $20,000 travel and networking allowance that facilitates fieldwork and helps scholars organize and participate in global research and foundation events.
Peirce holds a master’s degree from Carleton’s Norman Paterson School of International Affairs and a bachelor’s in International Development Studies and Spanish from Dalhousie University and the University of King’s College. Her graduate research addressed social movements’ responses to urban violence and post-conflict challenges in Latin America.
She is currently a doctoral student in Criminal Justice at John Jay College and the Graduate Center, at the City University of New York (CUNY), in New York City. Her current research analyzes prison reform processes, alternatives to incarceration and re-entry issues in the framework of broader criminal justice system reforms, particularly in Latin America and the Caribbean. Her writing has been published in The Paterson Review and Studies in Religion, as well as in the IDB’s Technical Papers series and its Sin Miedos blog on citizen security.
The 2015 scholarship cohort joins a network of some 370 promising researchers, outstanding intellectuals and seasoned decision-makers committed to applying their knowledge and skills to pressing Canadian and global issues. The sixteen 2015 Trudeau scholars are exceptional Canadian students who have distinguished themselves through academic excellence, civic engagement and a commitment to reaching beyond academic circles. Since the program’s inception in 2003, the foundation has awarded 187 scholarships representing an investment of $20 million in Canada’s intellectual leadership.
