This program funds high-quality research projects aimed at uncovering causes or treatments for ALS and related neurological diseases, or improving quality of life through symptom management and support for people and families affected by ALS.

Discovery Grants are available in two funding streams:

· Seed Grant (Stream 1): Supports high-risk, high-reward projects with novel ideas or early data. Offers up to $125,000 over two years to help generate preliminary data for future research.

· Development Grant (Stream 2): Provides up to $500,000 over three years for projects with strong preliminary data and a clear path toward human impact. Designed to support collaborative, translational research in ALS.

Applications require an institutional signature from the CORIS Director prior to submission. Please contact Katie Harriman for support and coordination of institutional signature.

Eligibility Criteria

The Discovery Grant Program encourages applications from multidisciplinary teams, especially those that include collaborators from outside the ALS field. Eligible teams must demonstrate complementary expertise and a collaborative approach to tackling ALS-related challenges.

The PI must hold an independent academic position and be conducting research at a qualifying Canadian institution for the full duration of the grant, as defined by CIHR guidelines.

For both streams, at least one additional co-investigator from a different institution or a distinct department within the same institution is required.
