Funding Value and Duration
Of the nominees put forward by Canadian universities, the Royal Society of Canada will choose three national nominees to compete for the title of National Champion and three international prizes worth 1 Million USD.
Overview
Launched in 2022, this international competition addresses the planetary crisis by mobilizing researchers engaged in transformational, breakthrough science with the greatest potential to stabilize Earth’s ecosystems within the Anthropocene.
The prize has a two-stage selection process with a national and an international component. Canadian universities are invited to submit up to three nominations for the initial national selection process, managed by the Royal Society of Canada. Information on last year’s international and national champions is available here.
Eligibility Criteria
Researchers from all disciplines who have reported their breakthrough research in a peer-reviewed article with an acceptance date for publication falling between 1st November 2023 and 31st October 2025 are eligible. Nominated publications should introduce new insights with the potential to be translated into technological or policy solutions to keep the planet’s ecosystem within any one or more of the nine planetary boundaries, defined as tipping points in the following nine areas: climate change, biosphere integrity, biogeochemical flows, ocean acidification, land use change, freshwater change, stratospheric ozone depletion, atmospheric aerosol loading, and novel entities in the environment.
