These competitive awards are also meant to encourage undergraduate students to undertake graduate studies by providing research work experience that complements their studies in an academic setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without exception, USRAs are tenable only at eligible Canadian institutions with an assigned allocation. Awards must be held at the institution where the offer of award originates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please note the following important eligibility criteria presently:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Black student researchers ONLY<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Health fields of study<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong> Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)<\/strong>:.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Black student researchers ONLY.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Social sciences, Humanities and Arts fields of study<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Institutions are assigned a specific allocation for these awards, as outlined in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca\/Students-Etudiants\/UG-PC\/USRA-Allocations-BRPC-Quotas_eng.asp\">Undergraduate Student Research Awards allocations<\/a> web page.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) <\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Natural sciences and engineering fields of study<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All students (applications are particularly encouraged from <strong>Indigenous and Black <\/strong>student researchers)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"w-screen px-6 cu-section cu-section--white ml-offset-center md:px-8 lg:px-14\">\n    <div class=\"space-y-6 cu-max-w-child-5xl  md:space-y-10 cu-prose-first-last\">\n\n        \n    \n    <dl class=\"cu-description cu-component-updated\">\n        \n    <div class=\"grid pt-4 pb-3 border-b accordion border-cu-black-100 md:pt-6 md:pb-5 first:border-t\">\n        <dt class=\"font-semibold not-prose\">\n            <button class=\"flex items-center justify-between w-full text-left accordion__button\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"accordion-award-value\">\n                <span class=\"flex-1 ml-auto text-left break-words whitespace-normal cu-icon\">\n                    Award Value\n                <\/span>\n                <svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" fill=\"none\" viewbox=\"0 0 24 24\" stroke-width=\"1.5\" stroke=\"currentColor\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-slot=\"icon\" class=\"w-5 h-5 ml-auto transition-transform rotate-0 accordion__icon text-cu-black-500\">\n                    <path stroke-linecap=\"round\" stroke-linejoin=\"round\" d=\"M8.25 4.5l7.5 7.5-7.5 7.5\"><\/path>\n                <\/svg>\n            <\/button>\n        <\/dt>\n        <dd class=\"p-0 mt-0 cu-prose cu-prose-first-last accordion__content md:p-0 md:mt-0\" hidden=\"\" id=\"accordion-award-value\">\n            \n\n<p><strong>Award Value<\/strong><br>For the 14-16 week duration of positions held between May 1 and August 31, 2025, the total value of the award ranges from:<br>14 weeks: minimum amount of $8,428.00<br>16 weeks: minimum amount of $9,632.00<br>The minimum values correspond to minimum wage in Ontario<br>Students will receive 4% vacation pay, as per the Ontario Employment Standards (ESA). (Students are not eligible for paid days off\/vacation days.)<br>The program makes no provisions for sick leave, or for other types of interruptions<br>Should sick or vacation leave be incurred during the employment period, the student would just need to ensure they worked their total number of hours by their award end date<br>Should a USRA be interrupted or terminated early for any reason, CORIS (coris@carleton.ca) should be informed immediately. Positions may not be deferred.<\/p>\n\n\n        <\/dd>\n    <\/div>\n\n\n    <div class=\"grid pt-4 pb-3 border-b accordion border-cu-black-100 md:pt-6 md:pb-5 first:border-t\">\n        <dt class=\"font-semibold not-prose\">\n            <button class=\"flex items-center justify-between w-full text-left accordion__button\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"accordion-duration-of-awards\">\n                <span class=\"flex-1 ml-auto text-left break-words whitespace-normal cu-icon\">\n                    Duration of Awards\n                <\/span>\n                <svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" fill=\"none\" viewbox=\"0 0 24 24\" stroke-width=\"1.5\" stroke=\"currentColor\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-slot=\"icon\" class=\"w-5 h-5 ml-auto transition-transform rotate-0 accordion__icon text-cu-black-500\">\n                    <path stroke-linecap=\"round\" stroke-linejoin=\"round\" d=\"M8.25 4.5l7.5 7.5-7.5 7.5\"><\/path>\n                <\/svg>\n            <\/button>\n        <\/dt>\n        <dd class=\"p-0 mt-0 cu-prose cu-prose-first-last accordion__content md:p-0 md:mt-0\" hidden=\"\" id=\"accordion-duration-of-awards\">\n            \n\n<p><strong>Duration of Awards<\/strong><br>The duration of the award is 14 to 16 weeks on a full-time basis (35 hours\/week)<br>USRA awards are tenable at any time during the year as permitted by your academic program and faculty, and agreed upon by student and supervisor<br>Students may be enrolled in a maximum of 1.0 credit during the tenure of the award, if special arrangements to make up the time have been made with the Supervisor (for courses scheduled during business hours).<br>Over the summer, a maximum of 0.5 credit is allowed in early summer, and 0.5 credit in late summer<br>Recipients are not permitted to do thesis research during the term of the award. It is permitted to use data acquired during a USRA as the basis of a thesis, provided registration in the thesis course start after the USRA employment is completed.<br>USRAs may be held during co-op placements<br>Remote work is acceptable with supervision expected on a frequent basis. Students who have not been employed by Carleton before will need to fill out an <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/hr\/payroll\/new-employees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Online Employee Intake Form<\/a>. Supervisors communicate their funding information to their faculty contact directly (FASS: <a href=\"mailto:sarahmohammed@cunet.carleton.ca\">Sarah Mohammed<\/a>, FED: <a href=\"mailto:gradadmineng@cunet.carleton.ca\">Tom Morrice<\/a>, SCI: <a href=\"mailto:odscience@cunet.carleton.ca\">Maria Doria<\/a>, or for SSHRC and CIHR-USRAs to <a href=\"mailto:sarah.adams3@carleton.ca\">Sarah Adams<\/a>).<br>After completing the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/hr\/payroll\/new-employees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Online Employee Intake Form<\/a> (if applicable), no further action is required by the student or the supervisor with regards to payroll.
