Of the nominees put forward by Canadian universities, the NRC will choose three national nominees<\/b> to compete for the title of National Champion and three international prizes worth CHF 1 million (~$1.6M Cdn).<\/span><\/p>\n

The sustainability challenges facing our planet are colossal, demanding immediate attention. They can be tackled only with a concerted global effort and an intelligent, pragmatic approach, and by uncovering the best ideas in the field of sustainability science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scientists working within sustainability have identified nine planetary boundaries that should not be crossed, as described by Professor<\/span> Johan Rockstr\u00f6m<\/a> and Owen Gaffney in their book<\/span> Breaking Boundaries<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

The current state of scientific knowledge makes a convincing case that urgent action is needed to prevent humanity from crossing these boundaries. Science tells us the window of opportunity for action is limited and we need to act now. This is the main ambition for the creation of the Frontiers Planet Prize: to mobilize the scientific community to speed up the search for planetary solutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Eligibility Criteria<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Nominations for the prize come from the world\u2019s foremost universities, national academies and funding agencies. This creates a dynamic, global competition among countries and their leading scientific institutions.  <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Renowned sustainability scientists make up the Jury of 100, voting first for one National Champion from each country, and then for the three prize-winning International Champions. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
