We help Carleton researchers reach agreements with organizations in Ottawa, across Canada, and around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"specifically-ips-provides-support-by\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Specifically, IPS provides support by:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Identifying and negotiating with potential partners<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Participating in the development of <a href=\"https:\/\/research.carleton.ca\/ips\/constructing-a-budget-and-research-plan\/\">project budgets and research plans<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/research.carleton.ca\/ips\/arranging-financing\/\">Arranging appropriate financing options<\/a>, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/research.carleton.ca\/ips\/public-funding-collaborations\/\">leveraging public funding<\/a> with industry capital and expertise<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reviewing and negotiating <a href=\"https:\/\/research.carleton.ca\/ips\/carleton-researchers\/agreements\/\">research-related agreements<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Providing advice regarding the management of <a href=\"https:\/\/research.carleton.ca\/ips\/carleton-researchers\/intellectual-property\/\">intellectual property<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"process-obtaining-a-research-contract\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Process: Obtaining a Research Contract<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Where to Start<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/research.carleton.ca\/ips\/\">Industry and Partnership Services (IPS) <\/a>\u00a0provides advisory services to Carleton faculty who want to establish research related agreements with industry, government, other universities and community partners.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is important to involve IPS in the early stages of the discussion with your partner(s).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>IPS can lead the negotiation between you, your partner(s) and the University.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>IPS can draft the agreement between Carleton and one or more partners according to the specific requirements of the collaboration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you receive a collaboration agreement from a partner, IPS can review, advise, provide clarification and lead the negotiation on your behalf to achieve the most favorable terms for a successful partnership.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Find Sponsors to Support your Research<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For assistance on finding a partner for your research, please contact a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/research.carleton.ca\/ips\/contact\/\">IPS team<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Process<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Initial discussion between faculty member and IPS regarding the statement of work, goals of the partnership, intellectual property and licensing rights, publication requirements, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>IPS drafts a contract (or reviews the partner\u2019s draft) and discusses it with faculty.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once the faculty member(s) and IPS are in agreement with the draft contract, this document is sent to the partner(s) with any suggested revisions and\/or recommendations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If needed, IPS can arrange a meeting with the partner(s) to resolve any remaining issues.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When all the parties agree to the terms and conditions, IPS facilitates contract signature by an authorized signatory of Carleton University and sends the agreement to Research Financial Services for fund opening.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Important Things to Remember<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Research contracts and agreements must follow Carleton\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/secretariat\/wp-content\/uploads\/Signing-Authorities-Policy-with-Checklist.pdf\">Signing Authorities Policy.<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep<a href=\"https:\/\/research.carleton.ca\/ips\/carleton-researchers\/indirect-costs-of-research\/\"> Indirect Costs<\/a> in mind when planning your budget<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consider your <u><a href=\"https:\/\/research.carleton.ca\/ips\/carleton-researchers\/intellectual-property\/\">intellectual property<\/a><\/u><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A<a href=\"https:\/\/research.carleton.ca\/ips\/carleton-researchers\/agreements\/\"> Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA)<\/a> may be valuable if proprietary information must be disclosed in order to advance a potential research collaboration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>_________________________________________________________________<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visit <a href=\"https:\/\/research.carleton.ca\/ips\/who-can-help-me-with\/\">&#8220;Who can help me with&#8230;?&#8221; <\/a>&nbsp;for a detailed description of the respective responsibilities of the various divisions of Carleton research services, and a directory of helpful documents, and forms and templates.
