{"id":167,"date":"2017-05-02T15:48:53","date_gmt":"2017-05-02T19:48:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cutheme.local\/researchethics\/?post_type=cu_description&#038;p=167"},"modified":"2026-03-17T10:23:23","modified_gmt":"2026-03-17T14:23:23","slug":"submitting-an-ethics-application","status":"publish","type":"cu_description","link":"https:\/\/research.carleton.ca\/researchethics\/description\/submitting-an-ethics-application\/","title":{"rendered":"Submitting an Ethics Application"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 id=\"do-i-submit-to-cureb-a-or-cureb-b\" class=\"wp-block-heading trigger active\"><strong><span class=\"slide-cu_people_job_title\">Do I submit to CUREB-A or CUREB-B?<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers submit to a particular board based on their department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>CUREB-A: this Board reviews all ethics applications where the lead Carleton University researcher is in the Faculty of Public Affairs, Sprott School of Business, and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (exclusive of Psychology).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CUREB-B: this Board reviews all ethics applications where the lead Carleton University researcher is in the Faculty of Engineering and Design, Faculty of Science, Department of Psychology, the Institute of Cognitive Science and any research that involves the collection of biological specimens or bodly fluids (e.g., blood, saliva, tissue samples), the use of a bio-instrument (e.g., electrodes, MRI\/X-ray imaging, sensors for blood pressure or temperature), or a bio-intervention (e.g., administration of a drug by mouth or injection, drug testing, medical devices, rehabilitative exercise programs, mental health programs, inducing moderate or severe physical or biological or pharmacological stress).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Please note: Board expertise will also be taken into consideration when protocols are submitted to CUREB-A or CUREB-B for review.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are still unsure please contact the\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:ethics@carleton.ca\">Research Ethics Coordinators<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"toggle_container\"><strong><span class=\"slide-cu_people_job_title\">How do I use the online application system to submit to CuResearch?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"trigger active\">For instructions on how to use the Online Submission System, please consult the following documents:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the <a href=\"https:\/\/research.carleton.ca\/researchethics\/submit-an-application\/\">CuResearch User Guide<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"can-grad-students-submit-a-protocol-for-their-thesis-before-their-prospectus-meeting\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can Grad students submit a protocol for their thesis before their prospectus meeting?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>No. In the case of graduate theses, it is necessary to have the prospectus completed and approved before the ethics application is submitted, in order to avoid premature and repeated evaluation of the project by the REB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"do-honours-students-always-require-ethics-approval-for-their-thesis\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do Honours students always require Ethics approval for their thesis?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes. For educational purposes, all honours students must submit an ethics application for their thesis, including for anonymous archival research. In addition, honours students must include a copy of their <strong>ethics clearance certificate<\/strong>, which includes the study reference number, when they submit their thesis.
