Banu Örmeci Receives Water Canada’s 2021 Water’s Next Awards (Academic Leader Category)

Carleton’s own Banu Örmeci, professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering has been recognized as an Academic Leader in the 2021 Water’s Next Awards.

Örmeci and her research team develop innovative technologies in wastewater and biosolids detection and treatment tackling issues such as algae bloom detection in Canadian waterways, monitoring microalgae and cyanobacteria in wastewater, and tracking coronavirus levels in sewer systems.

Örmeci’s work is essential in monitoring harmful bacteria in Canadian waters, ensuring sustainable aquatic ecosystems are maintained, providing non-toxic to aquatic life and humans alike.

Her research team have developed a real-time, in-line detection system to achieve polymer dose optimization, technology that has been incorporated into UV-vis sensors, with RealTech in Whitby.
