J.P. Bickell Foundation: Medical Research Grant
The Medical Research Grant assists biomedical scientists of various departments and faculties in universities, hospitals and scientific institutions concerned with medical research. These grants may be distributed among medical research institutes and universities in Ontario.

Value and Duration
Typically, between $25,000 and $80,000 for one to two years.
Supplemental grants may only be made for equipment essential to the described project where main source funding for equipment is unobtainable. For equipment costing more than $10,000, indicate the use, extent of use, availability of similar equipment and the current operating support.
Eligibility
The Foundation will use the following criteria to assess applications:
- Projects must have scientific merit and be primarily medical in nature.
- New researchers seeking start-up grants receive priority.
- New, innovative projects receive priority.
- Applications submitted should most suitably fit the institutions’ requirements and the Foundation’s criteria.
- Grants are not made to cover deficits or to supplement a project grant from another granting agency (except for essential equipment).

How to Apply
Carleton may submit one application per competition. If required, internal proposals will be adjudicated with input from an internal review committee. Internal proposals should be emailed to katieharriman@cunet.carleton.ca.
Internal proposals are due by Friday, March 28, 2025 at 12 p.m. with the following elements:
- Up to date CVs for the applicant and co-applicants (separate files)
- Name and contact information of applicants, project title and duration, outline of research (2 pages), research plan, proposed use of funds and budget (in a single document)

Internal Process
An internal committee with experience in the J.P. Bickell Medical Research Grants will review the internal proposals, providing feedback and a ranking. The highest-ranking proposal is recommended for full proposal submission. The committee may choose to meet to discuss closely ranked proposals. Applicants will be notified of the committee’s decision no later than April 17, 2025.
External Submission Steps
- Submit an internal Carleton Approval Form through our central awards management database cuResearch.
- The Office of the Vice-President (Research, Innovation and International) (OVPRII) coordinates the submission of the external application package to the granting agency. Applications must include an institutional letter of support, as well as a completed signature form.
