Preliminary Call for Research Projects with Large-Scale Infrastructure Requirements

September 5, 2025

Time to read: 2 minutes

Do you have an innovative idea for a research project that requires a team and a significant new investment in research infrastructure (equipment, renovation, software, data purchase, etc.) to be feasible?

Carleton anticipates that the next round of the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) Innovation Fund (IF) competition will launch sometime in 2026. CFI limits the number of IF proposals each university can submit to each competition. Details on Carleton’s selection process will be shared in early Fall 2025.

Establishing collaborative multi-institutional research teams, developing innovative world-leading projects and scoping out extensive equipment requirements take time. As such, the Carleton Office for Research Initiatives and Services (CORIS) is launching a preliminary call for Expressions of Interest (EOI) to allow researchers to pitch research projects with potential infrastructure requirements exceeding $1M in total costs.

Principal investigators and/or small teams of up to four researchers are invited to submit EOIs via an online form. EOIs will not be adjudicated.

CORIS will offer a series of services to those submitting EOIs (including facilitated brainstorming sessions, budget development support and strategic advisory services) to help develop their ideas and teams in time for the anticipated 2027 CFI IF competition. Submitting an EOI is strongly encouraged but not required for participation in the 2027 competition.

The EOI form is now open for continuous intake until September 30, 2025.

If you are uncertain whether your idea is appropriate for this EOI, or if have any additional questions, please contact Kyla Reid (kyla.reid@carleton.ca), Assistant Director, Research Development.
