Overview

The GIA program provides operating funds to support important, pertinent, novel research in the areas of heart disease and stroke. GIA funding promotes research discovery, exploration and innovation across all health research themes. Knowledge gained from scientific findings contributes to the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular health of Canadians through prevention, treatment and recovery.

Research is supported across the four health research themes:

• Basic biomedical
• Clinical
• Health services/systems
• Social, cultural, environmental and population health

NEW: The Grant-in-Aid – Indigenous Research Stream

This new stream will support Indigenous‑led heart and/or brain health research grounded in Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Doing and advancing Indigenous knowledge and data. The GIA-I Stream offers support for projects in cardiovascular or cerebrovascular research that are Indigenous-led and culturally grounded, community-driven, and committed to upholding the sovereignty and wisdom of Indigenous Peoples throughout the research process. Value and Duration

Up to $400,000 for up to four years.

Heart and Stroke will not approve total budgets exceeding $400,000 for a four-year term, $300,000 for a three-year term, $200,000 for a two-year term or $100,000 for a one-year term. For requested terms greater than one year, there is no annual caps on request. However, please be advised that awarded budgets, including term, must be fully justified or reductions may be applied in the final allocation of the grant.

Eligibility

Principal applicants (PAs) and co-PAs must have a full-time academic or faculty appointment (i.e., at the assistant or clinical assistant professor level at minimum) in Canada at the time the application is submitted.

Applicants may submit only one grant application (new or renewal) as either PA or co-PA. Applicants may hold up to two Heart and Stroke-funded GIAs as either PA or co-PA at any time.

Funds may only be used for research conducted in Canada.

Indirect costs are ineligible

Special Requirements

All applicants (PAs and co-PAs) are required to complete one of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research’s (CIHR) sex and gender training modules.

Submitting Your Application

1. Submit an internal Approval Form through our central awards management database cuResearch. Consult the user’s manual for guidance.
2. Submit an external application to the Heart and Stroke Foundation through their online portal. Signature is required from the institutional signing authority.
