Overview

The Simons Foundation’s Mathematics and Physical Sciences (MPS) division is accepting applications for Targeted Grants to Math+AI Institutes, a one-time call to support established institutes or centres in addressing AI challenges. The program funds workshops and initiatives that help researchers evaluate recent AI-assisted results using the standards of the mathematics community, learn and use new tools, share perspectives, and shape collective standards for AI use. It was created in partnership with Anthropic and OpenAI, which may each grant additional funding separate from the foundation.

Up to five awards are expected from the Simons Foundation.

Value and Duration

Up to $500,000 USD total over two years, inclusive of 20% indirect costs.

Eligibility

Applications may be submitted by established U.S. and foreign public and private educational and nonprofit institutes and research centers. This program will not support national labs, or the equivalent, with a primary focus on experiments.

The principal investigator (PI) is typically the director of the institute, although this is at the institute’s discretion.

Visit the Simons Foundation website for more information on eligibility to apply.

Special Considerations

With the applicant’s consent, applications may be shared with Anthropic and OpenAI for possible additional funding.

Institutional Quota

Only one application per institute or center may be submitted. There is no limit on the total number of applications from a university, provided they come from distinct centers or institutes. A joint proposal from multiple institutes or centers within one university is also allowed.
