Description

The Terry Fox New Frontiers Program Project Grants (PPG) is a long‑standing national program supporting Canada’s leading cancer research teams. The program is designed to advance breakthrough and transformative biomedical, clinical, and translational cancer research that has the potential to redefine cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, or understanding of cancer biology.

The program emphasizes team‑based science, bringing together investigators with complementary expertise to address complex cancer research challenges that cannot be effectively tackled through individual operating grants alone. Priority is given to high‑risk, high‑reward research with the potential for significant impact, supported by collaborative environments that foster innovation, leverage cutting‑edge technologies, and provide strong training opportunities for the next generation of cancer researchers.

Scope of the Program

Funded Program Projects must be organized around a clearly defined and cohesive cancer research theme and include:

The program supports both new thematic research programs and the renewal of existing Terry Fox PPGs, provided that renewal applications continue to advance the same core research theme.

Funding Value

Up to $3,000,000 CAD total

Three‑ to five‑year grant term, commencing July 1, 2027

Eligibility Criteria

Applications must be submitted by Canadian‑based research teams.

Teams must consist of at least three independent investigators, who may be from the same or different institutions.

The Application must comprise no fewer than three innovative, independently fundable research projects, each led by separate Principal Investigators who contribute significantly to a well-defined research theme or topic.

Indirect costs are not eligible

How to Apply

The application process involves a Letter of Intent (LOI) stage followed by an invited full application. Separate application guides and templates are provided for new and renewing Program Project Grant applications. TFRI requires documents to be submitted electronically as PDF and Excel documents to ppg@tfri.ca..
