In recent years, provincial and federal governments have introduced requirements to safeguard research, compelling higher-education institutions to share the responsibility to protect sensitive technology research and to consolidate the integrity and resilience of the research ecosystem.
What is research security?
Research security refers to any measures taken to safeguard sensitive technology research, knowledge and data from misappropriation or misuse, which can look like:
- Building a strong project team;
- Protecting building or lab access, and;
- Monitoring your compliance with security protocols.

Research safeguards promote transparent, mutually beneficial collaboration and prevent the unethical exploitation of your intellectual property, which could result in diminished publishing or commercialization prospects, loss of funding, negative reputational impact, and other losses of opportunity.
