SSHRC/NSERC Residual Funds
Allows researchers to request within three months of the end of their use of funds date continued access to 50% of the unspent funds for up to 12 months through Carleton’s General Research Fund (GRF)providing they have spent more than 50% of their total original grant amount.
Like all other research awards, your SSHRC/NSERC account will be deactivated immediately after the end of the use of funds period (i.e., the last day of the final year of spending or any applicable extension year).
For SSHRC and NSERC programs, if an extension is not approved by the agency and you have spent at least 50% of the total original research grant amount, you can request within three months of the end of your use of funds date continued access to 50% of the unspent funds for up to 12 months through Carleton’s General Research Fund (GRF). The request must be fully justified in terms of an ongoing research program or new initiative, including providing a budget breakdown and timeline duration of no more than 12 months.
As stated in the Tri-Agency Residual Balances policy (for SSHRC and NSERC only), any funds remaining at the end of the research grant or applicable extension year will be transferred to the GRF pending notification from the agency. The university may use these funds for the “broad purpose of enhancing the quality of research in the natural sciences and engineering, or in the social sciences and humanities” including internal programs in these areas of research.
Any funds remaining at the end of the research grant or applicable extension year for CIHR funds must be returned to the agency.
The university is required to spend at least 50% of the total opening balance of its GRF fund each year. To ensure compliance, the Carleton Office for Research Initiatives and Services (CORIS) has implemented the following procedures for the management of SSHRC and NSERC residual funds:
- The Research Post-Award (RPA) team will notify you via email in regards to the end of your use of funds.
- Request an extension from SSHRC/NSERC via the RPA team up to six months prior to the end date of the use of funds. If extension is not approved…
- Submit a request for up to 50% of the residual balance by completing the Residual Funds Request Webform.
- Request may be to support an ongoing research program or new initiative.
- Submission deadline: Requests can be made six months prior to the end of the use of funds up until three months after the funds expire. No extensions will be granted.
- Funding period: Any activities and expenditures must be completed within a maximum of one year of award. No extensions will be granted.
Requests will be reviewed by the Office of the Vice-President (Research and International) on a case-by-case basis.
