Office of Research Ethics and Security
The Office of Research Ethics and Security oversees research approvals at Carleton University and helps safeguard sensitive technology research, knowledge and data.
Serving as an ethics resource for the Carleton community, our team ensures that research with humans, animals and biohazards meets the highest ethical and regulatory standards in Canada. We also collaborate with Environmental Health and Safety to support compliance with the federal government’s controlled goods program.
The office governs the following boards and committees:
- Carleton University Research Ethics Boards for research involving human participants:
- Animal Care Committee for research involving animal subjects
- Biohazards Committee for research involving biohazardous materials
All research conducted by members of our community that involves animals or human participants must receive approval from the appropriate board or committee. This requirement applies to research carried out at Carleton, off-campus and to projects previously approved by another academic institution.
The Office of Research Ethics and Security champions responsible research practices and works to foster a resilient, secure research environment that supports strong, collaborative partnerships.
