Pedagogical Merit Review for the Use of Animals in Teaching

The Canadian Council on Animal Care, which oversees animal use for research, teaching and testing, requires a review of pedagogical merit before animals can be used in teaching. This is done through the Scientific Committee on Academic Planning (SCAP), working with a reviewer knowledgeable about the 3Rs.

Animals may only be used once the ACC has received confirmation of pedagogical merit and has approved a corresponding Animal Use Protocol.
