Rowan Thomson

Former Canada Research Chair in Radiotherapy Physics

Degrees: PhD (Waterloo)

“I focus on modelling the interactions of radiation with matter to provide better cancer treatments.”

Rowan Thomson is using physics to help the field of medicine by focusing on radiation therapy for cancer treatment. One treatment in particular—brachytherapy—has been a particular focus for Thomson who has developed a fast code for calculating radiation doses in this therapy. With collaborations across Canada, Thomson and her team are hoping to use her innovative brachytherapy methods for prostate and breast cancer treatments. Thomson is passionate about creating better cancer treatments that will help lower complications for patients, reduce health-care costs and improve the health of Canadians.
