Carleton University’s Ravens Racing Teams are set to unveil their newest hybrid and non-hybrid racing cars, designed and manufactured by engineering students.

Carleton University’s Engineering Department has 14 years of experience in formula racecar engineering and currently operates two racing teams known as Ravens Racing. One team consists of 27 fourth-year undergraduate engineers who receive a full-year credit for designing, manufacturing and testing their components on a Formula Hybrid all-wheel drive car; while the other team is composed of just over 40 volunteer students from various academic years and disciplines who are free to design, manufacture, and test their components on a Formula race car that is gas powered.

“As a member of the Ravens Racing Team students are able to implement components that they themselves have designed and watch those components complete the design cycle, a feat that doesn’t traditionally occur in undergraduate studies,” said Bob Desnoo, project and test engineer for the Formula Hybrid Project. “Students are able to experience the world of motorsports and in the past have gone on to work for the Red Bull Racing team and Dodge. However, the best part of being a Ravens Racing Team member is getting the chance to drive the cars!”

Although the Formula Hybrid car is powered by gas and electric drives, both teams work in tandem to optimize resources and share knowledge to make it to international competition in the spring. For the Formula Hybrid team the competition is held April 28 against 20 other universities in Loudon, New Hampshire. The volunteer team will be heading to Brooklyn, Michigan to compete against 120 teams on May 8.
