The Office of the Vice-President (Research and International) is delighted to welcome Dr. Pauline Rankin as Associate Vice-President (Research and International), effective Jan. 1, 2015.

Dr. Rankin most recently served as Associate Dean (Research and Graduate Affairs) in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, a position she has held since 2007 at Carleton University. In her various administrative positions, she was committed to the internationalization of faculty research opportunities (including the establishment of an IDRC-CIDA Visiting Scholar in Women’s Studies), and in academic programming, with recent involvement in the establishment of the Bachelor of Globalization and International Studies. This experience will serve her well in her mandate to, among other things, develop a strong focus in the internationalization of Carleton’s research agenda.

Dr. Rankin’s own research adopts a global approach to address issues of governance and gender. She has worked with governments, NGOs, international organizations (e.g. OECD, the UN Development Fund and UNIFEM), industry and academic institutions in Asia, South Asia, Africa and several post-Soviet countries. Most recently, she was part of the Carleton University team awarded a $1-million research grant from IDRC to study women’s roles in the artisanal mining industry in Central Africa.

Dr. Rankin is well-poised to take a leadership role in advancing Carleton’s internationalization agenda, and facilitating its competitiveness as a destination university for scholars and students. She will play an integral role as the university pursues its ambitious plans to continue its impressive advancement as an internationally competitive research-intensive comprehensive university.
