At the Society for Modeling and Simulation International’s (SCS) annual conference, Carleton University researcher Gabriel Wainer was awarded the “Presidential Award for Service to the Society”.
The SCS is a global membership association providing collaboration opportunities for the modelling and simulation field for over 25 years.

Wainer, a professor in the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering, is being recognized for his long-term service to the Society and leadership in his field. The award is presented only every three years to candidates who have made outstanding contributions over the last 10 to 15 years.

The official award ceremony took place during the society’s Annual Modeling and Simulation Conference (ANNSIM) in Madrid, Spain, where researchers, practitioners and students from around the world share advances in topics ranging from core theories impacting the field to new areas such as artificial intelligence, cloud and quantum computing, and digital twins.
Wainer’s research involves modelling and simulation methodologies and tools, with a focus on discrete event systems, real-time modelling, cellular models, real-time operating systems and parallel/distributed/web-based simulation. His work can be applied for biomedical use, environmental and architectural modelling, 5G wireless communications, among others.
As the head of Carleton’s Advanced Real-Time Simulation Lab, Wainer’s team of researchers from all levels integrates interdisciplinary modelling tools from systems engineering, mechanical and aerospace engineering, cognitive science and architecture to simulate real-world systems, enabling accurate predictions and insights across business, scientific, and other sectors.
