Carleton Faculty And Graduate Students Receive NSERC Awards Totalling Almost $1.3 Million
Thirty-four graduate students and 32 faculty members at Carleton University have been awarded 2012 Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) grants, fellowships, supplements and scholarships. Many of these awards cover multiple years and total nearly $1.3 million. This funding is part of NSERC’s announcement of 3,750 significant new investments in fields such as engineering, botany, zoology, physics, mathematics, and Earth sciences.
“Carleton is a world–class research institution and our success across such a wide spectrum of research is a testament to the innovation delivered by our faculty and students,” said Kim Matheson, vice-president, Research and International. “Funding of this magnitude from NSERC is fundamental to driving our ongoing leadership in cutting-edge research and creativity.”
Scientists, engineers and students at universities across the country will receive more than $410 million in grants and scholarships over terms ranging from one to five years. These awards comprise the 2012 competition results for NSERC’s Discovery Grants, Discovery Accelerator Supplements, Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarships, NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships, and Postdoctoral Fellowships.
At Carleton, projects that have been recognized include George Hadjisophocleous’ research on fire safety in buildings, tunnels and subway stations. Hadjisophocleous is the NSERC Industrial Research Chair on Fire-Safety Engineering Synopsis. His research is focused on studying different aspects of fires in buildings to reduce the risk of fire damage to life and property. Claudia Schroeder-Adams was also recognized for her research into meteorite impacts in the Cretaceous Western Interior Sea and the sedimentological and paleoecological response. Schroeder-Adams is a professor of Earth Sciences whose research focuses on micropaleontology, the study of deep-water marine environments deep back in time.
This NSERC program is an integral component of Canada’s support for research and training excellence at Canadian universities. The Discovery Grants Program funds ongoing programs of research in every scientific and engineering discipline. Of the 2,161 recipients, 125 were identified to receive a Discovery Accelerator Supplement, in addition to their Discovery Grant. Valued at $120,000 over three years, Discovery Accelerator Supplements are awarded to researchers whose research proposals suggest and explore high-risk, novel or potentially transformative concepts and lines of inquiry.
Overall, 1,599 new NSERC scholarships and fellowships were offered this year—consisting of the Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarships, NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships and Postdoctoral Fellowships.
