The Centre for European Studies at Carleton University has again been designated by the European Commission as a European Union Centre of Excellence (EUCE) and Network Coordinator for all Canadian EUCEs from 2013 until 2016.

With the designation comes a grant of 360,000 euros to support academic work, outreach and networking activities. Prof. Joan DeBardeleben, who holds a Jean Monnet Chair in the EU’s Eastern Neighbourhood Relations, heads the project; Political Science Prof. Achim Hurrelmann is Associate Director.

In the next three years, Carleton’s EU Centre will devote special attention to topics on the bilateral EU-Canada agenda and provide both the public and Canadian policy-makers with expert analysis of important issues, including:

This expertise will be offered in the form of policy workshops, public lectures, downloadable policy briefs and podcasts, as well as live webinars.

In co-operation with European diplomatic missions, the Centre for European Studies will provide a forum for the EU and its member states to present their positions on current issues in a new series, directed to the public at large, called European Perspectives.

The Centre’s educational and outreach programs will cater to a broad range of stakeholders. Special annual lecture series will include the Canada-Europe Business Lecture and the EU Law Lecture. Outreach to Ontario high school students and teachers will be realized through the EU Learning Project, which includes an online interactive educational tool, lesson plans and in-class teaching designed to complement Ontario’s provincial high school curriculum.

About the Centre for European Studies:
Carleton University has established itself as a leading institution in Canada in the field of European Studies, with innovative interdisciplinary degree and certificate programs attracting many talented scholars and students. In 2000, Carleton built on its academic strengths in the area of European Studies by securing EU funding to establish the Centre for European Studies (CES), a research centre that enhances academic opportunities at Carleton and brings scholarly expertise on the EU to a broader non-academic audience. The EU has renewed its support to the Centre several times.

Carleton’s Centre for European Studies, with the help of grant funds from the EU, will continue supporting Carleton’s academic programs, particularly the BA and MA degree programs offered through the Institute of European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies, by funding visiting scholars from Europe and providing grants to graduate students in order to advance EU-related research. With the use of innovative educational technologies, Carleton’s classrooms will be linked to European classes as well as to other scholars in Canada and around the world interested in European Studies. The Centre also supports student participation in an annual EU Study Tour program operated by a consortium of Canadian universities that involves three weeks of consultations in Brussels, Frankfurt, Strasbourg and Luxembourg.
