The first Kanta Marwah Research Grant in Peace and Security has been awarded to Michael Spacek, a PhD candidate in the Department of Political Science at Carleton University. This award is valued at $10,000 for the 2013-2014 academic year.
This research grant was established by Carleton’s Kanta Marwah as a memorial to Mahatma (M.K.) Gandhi. It recognizes the Economists for Peace and Security (EPS) and the Mahatma Gandhi Peace Council of Ottawa and their research in peace and security, conflict resolution and human development.
Spacek is researching the Maoist insurgency in the indigenous regions of central India. His doctoral project is entitled: Mao in the Land of Nehru: Governance and Insurgency in India’s Hinterland. He recently spent six months in India doing fieldwork for his PhD and will use the funds for further research into the conditions of marginalization and lack of state development as a first step towards resolving the conflict.
One his references said: “By laying bare the conditions that frame these insurgencies, Michael Spacek not only provides a voice for the marginalized in keeping with the teachings of M.K. Gandhi, but also provides a foundation upon which the underlying disputes over living space and land could be resolved peacefully, in keeping both with Gandhi’s teaching and with the goals of the Economists for Peace and Security.”
About Kanta Marwah
Marwah is professor emeritus in the Department of Economics. Her work concentrates on econometrics, macroeconometric models and their policy applications, international trade and foreign exchange markets, Asian integration and peace economics.
Carleton honoured Marwah in 2013 with the Founders Award, which pays tribute to those who have made significant contributions to the advancement of Carleton through their dedication, generosity and commitment to Carleton’s values. Her philanthropy includes contributions to the Dewan Chand and Ratna Devi Marwah Memorial Scholarship in Mathematics and Statistics at Carleton, the Prince Memorial Achievement Award in the Arthur Kroeger College of Public Affairs at Carleton, support of the Kanta Marwah Lecture Series of the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute and gifts to the National Gallery of Canada and the National Arts Centre of Canada.
