The Ministry of Economic Development, Trade and Innovation for Ontario announced today that two researchers from Carleton’s Department of Geography and Environmental Studies are recipients of Early Researcher Awards (ERA). Each researcher will receive $140,000 to support research in a broad range of topics, including Inuit culture and geography, and climate change.

“We are delighted with the important contributions our scientists are making to Ontario’s competitive edge,” said Kim Matheson, vice president, Research and International at Carleton. “Our research results in new innovations, contributes to job creation and affirms our province’s enviable reputation as a major centre of research and development.”

Project details of Carleton’s ERA winners are below:
Gita Ljubicic – Inuit perspectives on the role and value of participatory mapping
Ljubicic’s research on Inuit culture and geography will result in important benefits for Ontario’s Frist Nations communities

Derek Mueller – Ice island drift and deterioration modelling
Mueller’s study of the movement of icebergs in an age of climate change will result in important innovations to protect Canada’s marine transportation and offshore petroleum industries.
