Carleton University welcomes Mary Herbert-Copley as the new executive director of 1125@Carleton. She brings a wealth of experience in policy and program development and implementation in the public and not-for-profit sectors.

“Mary’s qualifications are impressive, but it is her energy, her out-of-the-box thinking, ability to recognize and act on opportunities and to mobilize people from multiple sectors and perspectives that make her a real asset to 1125,“ said Kim Matheson, vice-president (Research and International).

Herbert-Copley is committed to building more sustainable communities in Canada, and has been engaged in both teaching and applying a strategic, deliberative design approach to problem-solving in public and social spaces for several years.

Prior to joining 1125@Carleton, she was vice-president of special initiatives and engagement for the Canadian Council on Social Development. She was also a visiting executive at the Institute on Governance, where she taught design thinking and created a design approach to address problems in the public sphere. In the federal government, Herbert-Copley held progressively more senior positions over the last 25 years.

Her last two positions were in Infrastructure and Communities. As director general of strategic initiatives, she co-ordinated the External Advisory Committee on Cities and Communities, which produced a set of socio-economic and environmental recommendations to strengthen Canadian communities. As director general of economic analysis and research, she led the State and Performance of Canada’s Core Public Infrastructure project that brought together a network of more than 60 stakeholders — federal departments, provinces, territories, municipalities, First Nations, municipalities, key industry and professional associations and academics.

Her government experience includes work with Industry Canada, where she was responsible for the successful policy development and launch of Broadband Canada, which continues to provide critical infrastructure to Canada’s northern, rural and remote communities and citizens, allowing them direct access to health, educational and other socio-economic services.
