As the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) reach their end date in 2015, negotiations are ramping up at the United Nations for the establishment of a new set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs, to be announced in September this year, will replace the MDGs and serve as a universal framework for achieving sustainable development outcomes in all countries by 2030, including Canada.

On Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2015, Carleton University’s Norman Paterson School of International Affairs and the Centre for the Study of Living Standards will launch a joint report called Canada 2030: An Agenda for Sustainable Development.

When:
Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2015 from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m.

Where: Conference Room, 2nd Floor River Building, Carleton University, 1125 Colonel By Drive, Ottawa

Media are invited to attend. This is an open event, however space is limited.

Canada 2030
takes an in-depth look what the SDGs could mean for Canada. Part of the Post-2015 Data Test, an initiative supported by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the International Development Research Centre’s Think Tank Initiative, the report looks at current trends related to poverty, education, employment and inequality, energy, the environment, infrastructure, governance and international cooperation in Canada. It unpacks global and national sustainable development priorities, challenges and opportunities for implementation of the SDGs, and data availability for measuring progress.

The report will be made available here on the day of the launch. It will be presented by lead authors Andrew Sharpe, Executive Director of the Centre for the Study of Living Standards, and Shannon Kindornay, Adjunct Research Professor, Norman Paterson School of International Affairs.

The launch will be followed by an interactive panel discussion with representatives from government, civil society and academia. André Plourde, Dean, Faculty of Public Affairs, Carleton University, will moderate the panel. Panelists include:

  • Jonathan Arnold, Head – Post-2015 Task Force, Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada
  • Gordon Betcherman, Professor, School of International Development and Global Studies, Ottawa University
  • Julie Delahanty, Executive Director, Oxfam Canada (TBC)
  • Yiagadeesen Samy, Associate Professor and Associate Director (MA Program), Norman Paterson School of International Affairs, Carleton University
  • Representative, Sustainable Prosperity

A short reception will follow.
